Coal Association of Canada calls for stronger government support to designate steelmaking coal as a critical mineral
EDMONTON, AB (November 13, 2025) – The Coal Association of Canada is calling upon the federal government to formally designate metallurgical coal as a critical mineral, recognizing the vital role in steelmaking, industrial manufacturing and supporting thousands of high-paying Canadian jobs This designation is essential to solidify Canada’s position as a dependable supplier amid growing trade uncertainties, including tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian metals and minerals.
The Association stresses that Canada’s metallurgical coal industry is strategically positioned to be a reliable and responsible partner in North American industrial development. The U.S. decision to classify metallurgical coal as a critical mineral affirms its essential role in industrial and national security. This recognition underscores the importance of securing steady access to metallurgical coal, a resource fundamental to building infrastructure, vehicles and countless other economic products. This move sets a clear precedent for Canada to adopt a similar designation, ensuring policy alignment and continued leadership in supplying the metallurgical coal vital to steelmaking.
“A metallurgical coal critical mineral designation would reinforce the industry’s position within strategic supply chains and enhance Canada’s ability to provide a stable, independent supply of the coal required to make steel,” says Robin Campbell, president of the Coal Association of Canada. “The Association urges governments to support responsible coal development through investments, regulatory streamlining and innovation support – steps that are essential to safeguarding Canadian jobs and the broader economic benefits the sector provides.”
The Coal Association of Canada remains dedicated to working collaboratively with governments, industry partners and stakeholders to advance policies that promote responsible growth and resilience of the Canadian coal sector. Together, we can secure a strong future for an industry that delivers value for Canadians.
