Coal Association of Canada honours Conuma Resources’ Hugh Kendrick
EDMONTON, AB (September 18, 2025) – The Coal Association of Canada (CAC) is pleased to announce Hugh Kendrick, Chief Sustainability Officer at Conuma Resources, as the 2025 Award of Distinction recipient. The CAC Award of Distinction honours individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and significant contributions to the Canadian coal industry.
With over 35 years of global experience across mining, natural resources and industrial sectors, Hugh has been at the forefront of advancing sustainability and responsible resource practices that balance the essential role of metallurgical coal in global steelmaking with a commitment to environmental stewardship. His leadership at Conuma Resources has helped drive the development of innovative sustainability frameworks that elevate industry standards in environmental performance, Indigenous and community engagement and workforce safety.
A strong advocate for integrating sustainability into all aspects of the coal industry’s operations, Hugh has championed strategies that reduce environmental impacts and spearheaded initiatives that encourage collaboration between industry, governments, rightsholders and community stakeholders. By prioritizing transparency, accountability and responsible mining practices, he has reinforced coal’s role in Canada’s resource economy while ensuring long-term benefits for local communities.
Hugh has been instrumental in shaping Conuma’s sustainability culture, setting new benchmarks for Canadian mining – pioneering sustainability and climate change reporting and driving carbon intensity reductions. He has championed ESG engagement with mining companies and suppliers across multiple fronts, with the purpose of challenging and encouraging business partners and industry peers to advance their sustainability goals and deliverables.
Beyond his professional achievements, Hugh is passionate about educating youth on personal finance – initiating the “Making Money Work” course at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Chetwynd Secondary School. This seven-week program facilitated by Hugh is a foundational course and covers topics such as budgeting, wealth accumulation, investing, taxation and retirement, providing students in grades 11 and 12 with essential financial literacy tools for their future.
“The Coal Association of Canada is proud to recognize Hugh Kendrick’s exceptional contributions to the coal industry in Canada,” says Robin Campbell, president of the Coal Association of Canada. “His leadership and vision have unified our industry, communities and policymakers around responsible development and a stronger Canadian voice in global coal supply chains.”
The Award of Distinction is presented annually at the Coal Association of Canada’s conference, which will take place this year at the Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver in Vancouver, British Columbia. Hugh will be presented with the award during the Awards Reception on Thursday, September 25.
