EDMONTON, AB – The Coal Association of Canada and its Board of Directors is pleased to welcome John Schadan as the new Chairperson of the Association, effective immediately. Mr. Schadan replaces Mark Bartkoski, who served as Chairperson from December, 2017 until March, 2019.
Mr. Schadan has several years of experience serving on the Board of Directors of the Coal Association of Canada, including serving as Chairperson from 2015 to 2017. He is currently the President of Conuma Coal Resources, a growing steelmaking coal producer in northeast British Columbia. Mr. Schadan has a strong knowledge of the industry built from over 30 years in Canadian mining, including as President & COO of Westmoreland Coal Company and various positions with Luscar Ltd., Manalta Coal Ltd., Fording Coal Ltd. and recently as VP, Operations for KMC Mining Corporation. He has a mining engineering degree from Queen’s University and has also served in other leadership roles with other industry associations such as the Alberta Chamber of Resources.

Mr. Schadan says he is “looking forward to continue to advocate for all facets of a safe, sustainable and socially responsible coal mining industry in Canada. The CAC is an effective voice for this industry and I am excited to help drive us forward.”
The Board of Directors would also like to express their sincere thanks to Mark Bartkoski for his time with the Association. During his term as Chairperson, Mr. Bartkoski’s leadership and drive helped launch the Community Champion Awards, increase membership and raise the profile of our annual conference. He has returned home to focus on family, his grandchildren and the next chapter in his career.
